Unfortunately, with all of this home time, many of us have ended up feeling more trapped than anything, and cabin fever appears to be just as widespread as the pandemic. Luckily, cabin fever is much easier to overcome than COVID.

 

The best way to get over your feeling of being trapped is, ironically, to get into your own head and utilize some of that alone time for self-reflection. 

 

Here is how you can create a self-reflective space in your home so you can get started:

 

How Does Self-Reflection Benefit Me? 

Before we get down to the nitty gritty and start discussing specifics, it is first necessary to talk about why you should practice self-reflection. 

 

We discussed in-depth the benefits of self-reflection in our last blog post, but in case you haven’t read that one yet, here is a brief overview: 

 

The actual benefits of self-reflection are highly varied from person to person, but everyone can expect to get at least something out of it. The most common benefits seen with this type of mental exercise, however, are mental illness symptom alleviation, a clearer sense of self, and a more calm and collected outlook on life. 

 

Essentially, by practicing self-reflection, you are setting yourself up for future success.

 

 

 

Why is it Important to Have a Self-Reflective Space?

Having a space where you can reflect that is conducive to the goals you’re trying to accomplish is very important. The best way to explain why, however, is to look at an example:

 

Let’s say that you’re trying to do some yoga and meditate to help induce a feeling of calm. However, you are doing this in your living room, where the TV is currently playing, you can hear people outside your front door as they walk down the street, and the refrigerator is buzzing incessantly. Given all of that, it would be pretty hard to focus on what you’re doing, wouldn’t it? 

 

Self-reflection is an activity that takes a ton of focus, so doing it just anywhere simply won’t do. Rather, you need to create a space in your home that lends itself to helping you, rather than hurting your progress. 

 

How Do I Create a Self-Reflective Space in My Home? 

Luckily, creating the space in which you wish to reflect is the easiest part of the process! There are only three simple steps you need to follow: 

 

Step 1: Determine What You Need

Different people will need different things in order to be able to properly reflect. For one person, they might want a room filled with stuffed animals and fuzzy blankets. For others, it might be beneficial to surround themselves with healing crystals or religious items. 

 

Because of this, the first step to creating a self-reflective space in your home is to determine exactly what you need in order to feel calm and concentrated.

 

 

 

Step 2: Choose Your Room and Make a List

Okay, so step 2 is technically 2 steps on its own, but for good reason. This step is all about planning, during which time you will both choose the room you want to make your reflective space in, as well as list out on a piece of paper the items you want in there. 

 

For the first part of this step, our suggestion is to choose a room that is quiet and that isn’t subjected to much through-traffic. Because of this, the living room or kitchen probably isn’t a good choice.

 

Additionally, figure out if you want your self-reflection items to be out in the open or if you want to be able to put them away when you aren’t using them. If you want to put them away, it may be beneficial to choose a room with a closet.

Next, go ahead and start making a list of the items that make you feel most calm and concentrated. For example, is white noise something that helps you concentrate, or do you need complete silence? Do you need something soft to touch, or something to smell such as incense?

 

Keep in mind, however, that you don’t have to buy anything for this step. The items on your list could simply be things you already have lying around that you just need to move to your new space!

 

Step 3: Decorate! 

As you may have guessed, for this step, you’re going to be gathering as many of the items on your list as possible and moving them into the room, organizing them in whatever way you see fit. If necessary, clear out an area where the items can be stored as well so you have easy access to them whenever you want to reflect. 

 

Once this step is complete, you’re ready to get started with your first self-reflection session!
